What is Qi (Chi) Wireless Charging? How does it work?
Qi, a Chinese word meaning "energy flow," is a highly popular wireless charging standard. While not available on every smartphone, it is predominantly found in high-end devices. Apple and Samsung users are likely more familiar with Qi charging than others. In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about this charging technology.
Qi wireless charging is a standard used to power electronic devices such as smartphones, headsets, and wearables wirelessly. It ensures secure operation and interoperability among Qi-enabled devices. A Qi device is certified hardware designed to charge batteries according to the Qi standard. Many smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi, support this standard. While proprietary wireless charging technologies exist, Qi remains widely supported.
Qi charging works based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. The charging pad and the smartphone have copper wire coils. When current flows through the charging pad's large coil, it generates a magnetic field. Placing the phone on the pad allows the smaller coil to convert the magnetic field into an electric current. This current is then transferred to the battery for storage.
Qi charging monitors the current, voltage, battery temperature, and charge level to ensure safe and efficient charging. Qi charging offers several advantages. It is easy to use, requires no cables, and reduces wear and tear on charging ports. Qi-certified wireless charging stations can charge multiple devices simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate chargers. It is also safer than wired charging, as risks such as short circuits and cable damage are minimized. Additionally, Qi charging helps prolong battery life by carefully monitoring temperature and controlling the charging process.
In conclusion, Qi wireless charging has revolutionized how we charge electronic devices. While not yet widespread in mid-range smartphones, this technology is continuously developing and expanding its reach. With its convenience and benefits, Qi charging provides a reliable and convenient solution for keeping our devices powered up throughout the day.

What is the difference between DisplayLink vs Alt Mode?
DisplayLink ports use a DisplayLink chip to extend displays using USB 3.0 data connectivity. They require drivers to be installed on the computer.
Alt Mode MST ports use Multi-Stream Transport to split a single display signal from the computer's GPU to two separate monitors.
DisplayLink technology was introduced before MST technology. MST is a subset of DisplayPort and DisplayPort Alt Mode, which is a feature of USB Type-C, while DisplayLink can be used with both USB Type-A and Type-C devices.
What is USB-C Power Delivery (PD) pass-through?
Using a Power Delivery pass-through with a supported USB-C laptop, you can power the laptop and the multiport adapter/hub with your existing USB-C laptop power adapter. To ensure the hub powers and charges your laptop, your host laptop's USB-C port must support USB Power Delivery. An existing USB-C laptop power adapter is plugged into the hub, which then "passes through" power to charge the laptop over the single USB-C connection.
Reserved Power
With most multiport adapters/hubs, some power (commonly between 4W and 15W, depending on I/O) is reserved for hub/downstream ports. If a hub that reserves 7.4W is used with a 60W USB-C power adapter, only 52.6W will be provided to the laptop via PD Passthrough.
Host USB-C Ports Without USB PD Support
Not all USB-C ports support the full functionality of the USB Type-C standard. Multiport adapters/hubs can connect to a host laptop’s USB-C port that doesn’t support USB Power Delivery. However, in this configuration, if a power adapter is connected to the multiport adapter/hub, it will not pass power through to the host laptop.
Can I leave my notebook computer connected to a charging dock overnight?
That's correct. It is generally safe to leave your laptop connected to a USB-C docking station with Power Delivery for extended periods. This is because modern laptops have built-in battery management systems that will prevent the battery from being overcharged.
In older laptops, the battery management system may not be as sophisticated, so it is possible that leaving the laptop connected to a docking station could damage the battery. However, even in older laptops, the risk of damage is relatively low if the laptop is not used heavily while connected to the docking station.
So, if you plan to leave your laptop connected to a docking station for an extended period, it is a good idea to check the laptop's battery management system to see if it has any special features that need to be enabled. Otherwise, you can be confident that your laptop will be safe.
Here are some additional tips for keeping your laptop battery healthy:

Docking Station vs. USB Hub – What’s the Difference?
The major difference between USB hubs and docking stations comes in their capabilities. A USB hub would draw power from your computing device and power up the connected peripherals. Since the USB hub can’t power up a laptop, it has a USB-C Power Delivery input port. This way, you can connect the laptop charger to the port connected to your main power outlet to charge your laptop, forming a pass-through charging system. Due to their lightweight and smaller size, they are mainly used as port replicators.
Docking stations are heavier compared to USB Hubs. But if you are to know what are the advantages of the docking station, they offer more robust performance and versatility. Some docking stations can be stationary, while some are portable. The stationary docking stations draw power from a wall outlet through an AC/DC power adapter to charge your PC or laptop swiftly.

How long is the USB cable that's included with your JU-EX0311-S1 extender?
The USB cable is 1 meter or 3.3ft long.
When should you use a longer video cable vs. a video extender?
Video converters and extenders should only be used when necessary. You can often avoid using them by purchasing the correct cable.
The following table lists the maximum length of cable for common video standards:
DisplayPort: 50 ft (15.2 m)
HDMI: 50 ft (15.2 m) [1080p] - 10~15m, [4K30Hz] - 10m, [4K60Hz] - 5m, [8K] - 2m
DVI: 50 ft (15.2 m)
VGA: 200 ft (71 m)
Video extenders convert an input signal to a higher voltage for transmission over longer distances and then convert the input signal back to the original video standard. The input and output signal will match on a video extender, as the same video standard is maintained end-to-end.
However, the signal quality degrades if a cable is extended with adapters or converters. This is because adapters and converters convert the signal use one video standard to another, which can introduce errors and artifacts.
Therefore, if you need to extend a video signal over a long distance, it is best to use a video extender. This will ensure the signal quality is maintained and you do not experience any errors.
How does Power over Ethernet (PoE) work?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a way to send power and data over the same Ethernet cable. You can power devices like IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points without running separate power cables.
There are two types of PoE devices:
Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE): These devices supply power over Ethernet cables. Examples are PoE switches, network cards, injectors, and fiber media converters.
Powered Devices (PD): These devices receive power over Ethernet cables. Examples are IP cameras, IP phones, small Ethernet switches, and wireless access points. There are different standards for PoE. The most common standard is IEEE 802.3af, which allows up to 15 watts of power to be sent over an Ethernet cable. More recent standards allow for even more power, up to 100 watts.
PoE has many advantages. It can reduce the cost and clutter of additional power supplies and eliminate the hassle and expense of running separate power to remote locations.
Here are some examples of how PoE can be used:
You can use PoE to power IP cameras in hard-to-reach places.
You can use PoE to power VoIP phones in offices without a power outlet nearby.
You can use PoE to power wireless access points in outdoor areas.
PoE is a great option if you want to power devices without running separate power cables. It is a cost-effective and convenient way to keep your devices running.
What Is HDMI over Ethernet?
HDMI over Ethernet is a way to send HDMI signals over a long distance. This means you can connect devices not near each other, like a TV and a Blu-ray player, with just an Ethernet cable.
HDMI over Ethernet works by sending the HDMI signal over the Ethernet. This is done by encoding the HDMI signal into a digital data stream and sending it over the Ethernet. The receiving device decodes the data stream, displaying the HDMI signal on its output.
HDMI over Ethernet is becoming more popular in home theaters and commercial applications. This is because it allows you to connect devices that are not near each other, and it can transmit signals over longer distances than traditional HDMI cables.
Here are some of the benefits of using HDMI over Ethernet:
- Longer distances: HDMI over Ethernet can transmit signals over longer distances than traditional HDMI cables. This makes it a good option for connecting devices not located near each other.
- Multiple devices: HDMI over Ethernet can connect multiple devices to a single Ethernet network. This makes it a good option for setting up home theater systems or conference rooms.
- Ease of use: HDMI over Ethernet is relatively easy to set up and use. You do not need to be an IT expert to get started.
Here are some of the limitations of using HDMI over Ethernet:
- Quality: The quality of the HDMI signal can be affected by the quality of the Ethernet network. The signal may be degraded if the network is not fast enough or has too much interference.
- Support: HDMI over Ethernet is not as widely supported as traditional HDMI connections. Not all devices support HDMI over Ethernet, so you must check compatibility before buying.
If you want to connect devices over long distances or set up a complex AV system, HDMI over Ethernet is a good option. However, it is essential to be aware of the limitations of the technology before you buy.
How to Extend HDMI over CAT cable?
To extend HDMI over CAT cable, you will need an HDMI over CAT extender. This device will allow you to send HDMI signals over a long distance using CAT5e, 6, or 7 cables.
The HDMI over CAT extender consists of two parts:
1. A transmitter: This part connects to the source device, such as a computer or Blu-ray player.
2. A receiver: This part connects to the display device, such as a television or projector.
The transmitter and receiver are connected using a CAT cable. The cable can be up to 100 meters long, allowing you to send HDMI signals over long distances.
Here are the steps on how to extend HDMI over a CAT cable:
- Connect the transmitter to the source device.
- Connect the receiver to the display device.
- Connect the CAT cable between the transmitter and receiver.
- Turn on the transmitter and receiver.
- The HDMI signal should now be extended over the CAT cable.
Here are some additional tips:
- Ensure that the CAT cable is of good quality and properly terminated.
- Use CAT5e, 6, or even 7 cables for the best performance.
- Keep the length of the cable as short as possible.
- Avoid running the cable near sources of interference, such as power cables or microwaves.
Top Considerations for Choosing an HDMI Extender
1. Distance: How far do you need to transmit the signal? Some extenders can only transmit signals over short distances, while others can transmit signals over long distances.
2. Resolution: What resolution is your HDMI signal? Some extenders can only support lower resolutions, while others can support higher resolutions like 4K or 8K.
3. Bandwidth: How much bandwidth do you need? The bandwidth requirements will depend on the resolution of your signal and the distance you need to transmit it.
4. Power: Does the extender need power? Some extenders can draw power from the Ethernet cable, while others need to be plugged into an electrical outlet.
5. Compatibility: Is the extender compatible with your devices? Ensure your chosen extender is compatible with your source device, display, and network infrastructure.
6. Ease of use: How effortless is the setup and use extender? Look for an extender with intuitive controls and user-friendly software.
7. Price: How much are you willing to spend? HDMI over Ethernet extenders range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.
Reasons to Use HDMI over IP
Here are four reasons to use HDMI over IP:
- Longer distances: HDMI over IP can transmit signals over longer distances than traditional HDMI cables. This makes it a good option for connecting devices not located near each other. For example, you can use HDMI over IP to connect a projector in a conference room to a source device in another room.
- Scalability: HDMI over IP is scalable, meaning you can easily add more devices to your system as your needs grow. This is impossible with traditional HDMI cables, limited to a single source and display.
- Cost-effective: HDMI over IP can be a cost-effective solution for extending HDMI signals. The cost of HDMI over IP extenders has decreased in recent years, making them a more affordable option than traditional HDMI cables.
Here are some additional benefits of using HDMI over IP:

If HDMI Out 1 supports 8K60Hz resolution with DTS 5.1 audio and HDMI Out 2 supports 4K120Hz resolution with LPCM 2 audio, the Auto Mode will configure both outputs to 4K120Hz resolution and LPCM 2 audio.
Copy Mode
This mode replicates the EDID information from HDMI Out 1 to the input device, ensuring that both HDMI outputs operate at the same resolution and audio format.
For instance:
Connecting two identical monitors with 4K144Hz capabilities and using Copy Mode will result in both outputs displaying 4K144Hz content.
Additionally, if HDMI Out 2 supports a lower resolution than HDMI Out 1, the splitter will downscale the resolution accordingly. Other video and audio formats will adhere to the EDID of HDMI Out 1.
For instance:
When HDMI Out 1 is set to 8K30Hz with DTS 5.1 audio and HDMI Out 2 is set to 4K60Hz with LPCM 2 audio, using Copy Mode will adjust HDMI Out 1 to 4K60Hz with DTS 5.1 audio and HDMI Out 2 to 4K60Hz without audio output.
*Note: When LPCM 2 receives an incompatible digital audio format, it may produce noise or mute the audio output.
Downscaler Mode
When connected displays have different resolutions, the splitter intelligently downscales the input resolution from 8K to 4K or 1080p, ensuring compatibility with both displays. Audio formats will adopt the lower format supported by either display.
For instance:
When HDMI Out 1 is set to 8K30Hz with DTS 5.1 audio and HDMI Out 2 is set to 4K60Hz with LPCM 2 audio, using Downscale Mode will retain the resolution of HDMI Out 1 but adjust the audio to LPCM 2. HDMI Out 2 will be downscaled to 4K30Hz with LPCM 2 audio.
For instance:
If HDMI Out 1 is set to 4K120Hz and HDMI Out 2 is set to 4K60Hz, using Downscale Mode will adjust HDMI Out 2 to 1080p120Hz. If HDMI Out 2 does not support 1080p120Hz, HDMI Out 1 can be adjusted to 4K60Hz, allowing HDMI Out 2 to display at 4K60Hz.

Mount
Screw stops turning preventing proper installation
The mounting brackets cannot be properly attached because Screw "N" stops after a few turns.
Solution: There are two solutions for this issue.
1. The problem may be excess material in each of the threaded hole. To remedy this, clean out the excess material from each hole. After this is done, the screws can easily be screwed in.
2. If your product is shipped with the wrong Screw "N". Please contact SIIG RMA to replace the screw. http://www.siig.com/support/rma
Screen tilts down and not staying in position
The monitor tilt mechanism may be loose. The bolt to tighten the monitor tilt is located behind the VESA plate or bracket either on the left or right side. Additional bolts for tightening the monitor tilt may be located on the top or bottom. Refer to the product installation manual for illustrations showing the specific monitor tilt bolt(s) located on the product. If the monitor continues to tilt after tightening, please contact SIIG RMA for replacement. http://www.siig.com/support/rma
Monitor arm droops and not staying in position
The gas spring or mechanical spring mechanism in the monitor arm may not have been sufficiently tensioned. The bolt to increase the monitor arm tension is located at the opposite end of the monitor arm from the VESA plate or bracket. Refer to the product installation manual for illustrations showing the specific bolt located on the product. Increase the monitor arm tension by using the included Allen key to rotate the bolt to the "+" side until the monitor stays floated at the desired height. If the monitor arm continues to droop after increasing the monitor tension, please contact SIIG RMA for replacement. http://www.siig.com/support/rma
Monitor arm rises and not staying in position
The gas spring or mechanical spring mechanism in the monitor arm may have been overly tensioned. The bolt to decrease the monitor arm tension is located at the opposite end of the monitor arm from the VESA plate or bracket. Refer to the product installation manual for illustrations showing the specific bolt located on the product. Decrease the monitor arm tension by using the included Allen key to rotate the bolt to the "-" side until the monitor stays floated at the desired height. If the monitor arm continues to rise after decreasing the monitor tension, please contact SIIG RMA for replacement. http://www.siig.com/support/rma
Monitor arm sways and not staying in position
The screw located on the end of the monitor arm joint may be loose. Tighten the screw using the included Allen key. Monitor arm makes noise during movement
Minor noise may occur due to gas spring or mechanical spring movement, or joint friction during normal operation. Ensure the monitor mount is setup with it's recommended load range, slowly move the arm through its full range of motion several times and use lubricant to reduce joint friction if needed. Do not apply lubricant on gas spring or mechanical spring.
Monitor mount base shifts position when adjusting screen
The desk clamp or grommet mount may not be sufficiently tightened, or the desk material may be compressing or slipping under load. Retighten the desk clamp or grommet mount and verify the mounting surface is solid. Use a SIIG adjustable reinforcement bracket mount plate to improve stability. If shifting continues, consider swapping the monitor mount installation to a different desk.
Monitor mount cannot be clamped securely to the desk due to an underside support bar
The desk's underside support bar interferes with the clamp mechanism preventing it from seating completely flush.
Solution: There are two solutions for this issue.
1. Reposition the clamp to a location where the bottom plate can make full contact with the desk. Alternatively, consider using a grommet mount installation method if supported by the desk.
2. Use a compatible spacer block to provide a flat mounting surface leveled with the support bar.
